But really ?Owls!

Someone found quite fun to download my owls, print them, and made photos. Which is quite OK (I mean, the print part). Then she posted them (not OK), they were noticed, and I finally found them on one of my favorite blogs with no mention of my name more than " some owls I found on the internet". And this is not OK at all.

A link to my blog was added afterwards thanks to the lovely people at Ohdeedoh (not their fault, and how lovely they were in following up, thank you so much guys!), but I never really allowed the use of my work in the original post, and I would have loved to be asked for. And then I got the usual "I couldn't find your name or website or whatever I didn't know", fake apology, since  my name was watermarked on the picture the blogger used.

Click on the picture to download a printable pdf

I had a bit of re-appropration to do, to have my owls back. I made myself some more owls, and made cute ornaments out of the illos, to enjoy them a bit before I find them again on someone else website. Which is not OK, by the way, unless you ASK FIRST.

And since I was at it , I thought that I could share my owls with you ! Print them, make ornaments, mobiles, put them on a string or print them on fabric, but please please please if you plan to show them on your website, name me as the author, add a link to my website, and be kind enough to tell me so I can gush and be happy you did.

Happy howlidays!

PS: I forgot to add a quick how to. Here we are:

EmailEmail Article to Friend

Reader Comments (17)

There's been a lot of similar problems on the net these days. Just recently a small mag was taking published food stories and not asking for permission. It's a big problem. Boo.

Actually, it's not as big as a problem as it used to be...People browse a lot, and find stuff quickly. With google and readers, exposure is bigger. Which means bigger chances to get stolen- And greater ones to find out. If the stuff was stolen and people made money out of it, then hurray! Here are the big bucks. A client with a contract will pay sometimes little. A thief will pay more to avoid being sued. Just send an email "My lawyer wanted to sue you right on but I thought we might come to an agreement..etc" It works wonders. I had clients not paying, but rarely any thief.

Hi Delphine,
I have just found your blog by chance and love the little owls. My Grand Daughter and I often do a lot of crafty things together and we particularly love owls, so thank you for your lovely little owls, I have downloaded them and shall use them in a project with my Grand daughter.
I have recently been fortunate enough to enjoy a trip to France from Australia and I just had to say to you that I absolutley loved it, France is a beautiful place.
Merci,
Karen

I have seen the owls similar to yours in many places. In fact the owls I draw are more like yours that you would ever admit to, even though today is the first time I have ever seen yours.

I also know that there are ways to erase a watermark and let the picture be posted online.

The ones that found your owls, could easily have found some that had the watermark erased.

If you do you research, you would know that watermarks are not fool proof. They are usually there to prevent someone
stealing you idea and selling it, for themselves, in an easy manner.

I saw the web site you mentioned and they were not selling the owls, they were using them in a shower decoration.

And not only that, I have drawn owls similar to yours, they are child like drawings and easy to draw, I saw those in school 38 years ago, without ever seeing your owls In fact, I see a page that could come to you and state you took their idea and have made it your own. I guess beware of anyone finding an owl drawing site, and how to draw it, because you have decided that only you are capable of doing so. I also found a few pages where you took the ideas of dressing your owls from. Perhaps they need to see how you have taken from them. Are you going to apologize and then blame the Internet for not having the watermark on their owls?

Example of a picture taken and used by others, is right here on your page, and advertisement for fabrics. The fawn is so over drawn by so many copy cats. It would probably take a court case and years to find out who the originator of that fawn drawing is.

In a nutshell, you have drawings that look like other peoples drawings, your is not special, they are easy to mimic and be mimicked, as you clothes on your owls, were taken from other peoples ideas, that were posted years before yours. or easy to start drawing owls is the ways your looks and many people drawn them like yours, without ever seeing one of your child like drawings.

So where is the credit you give to them? And worst of all, it was God that gave us the owl, you took your ires from him, where is the credit owed to God for designing and creating the owl in the first place?

Well, I'm glad you've reclaimed these! They are adorable. And there's no excuse (especially with watermark) to not credit the original source. :D
I had a woman buy one of my silkscreens and is now printing almost the exact same image and selling it. She's a larger and established business so you can imagine how her sales are responding. I know my tiny business benefited from the image. I have no copyright though. Its a public item that I photographed. Bah! Some people, eh?
I love your site. You are so creative and design sweet whimsical things. They make me happy to see each time you post.
:)

Thank you for these - and the pages from ages ago showing how you draw your birds. I had a go at doing my own tonight, and after many many years of saying I can't draw, I now CAN draw birds :)

Have fun and keep enjoying your art and life
