Cures to a slow computer

The other day,

I spent an hour on the phone with a friend to teach her how to make her computer faster and not crashing so often. 

 Then another good friend called me because she needed help too, and then I talked to another dear friend and she didn't know either...I had the same conversation twice, and all over again.  So I decided to write some geeky posts about the basics, the little stuff that will help keep that machine happy so you can work and forget about it.

 

First of all : DON'T PANIC. 

Follow this list step by step. I am not suggesting anything that could be dangerous for your machine today.

With computers, first thing to know: read, and reread those pop-up windows before clicking.

Let's start:  the first thing to do is to... restart that machine. Darling, you need to know all your passwords. Especially the administrator one. Note them in a pretty notebook. I do.

Then, Mac or whatever,  empty your internet cache. If you don't know how to do it, just google "How to empty your internet cache on {insert name of browser here}". On Safari, go to the Safari menu on the top left of your screen, and choose "reset Safari". Read calmly the options and choose all or some. The first time you will empty your cache your machine will slow and process for a long time. I do it often and it's quite fast. Doing it on your phone, tablet, anything that has an Internet browser, is also necessary.

Your machine should be much more fast, instantly. Be lady like and empty that cache at least every month, and even better, learn to do it without resetting your passwords.

Then, on any machine, check how much memory you have left on your hard drive. Once again, if you don't know how to do it, google it.  If your disk is full, remove all the unnecessary files, save the pictures on a dvd and/or online (Flickr someone? And then share with your family) or on an extra drive and delete the ones your don't need. Never trust completely an external drive, they always crash after one or two years.  Uninstall all the softwares you are never using. To uninstall a software , type " how to uninstall  {insert name of software here, or type "software"} " on Google. Free some space. Faster machine!

Then check how much RAM you have on that computer (Google? Yes. Or click the apple on the top left of your screen for a Mac, click "about this Mac" and check the number of GB -gigabytes. If you have less than 8 my dear, forget about Photoshop. You can add some RAM yourself if you feel comfy enough to handle hardware. I wasn't until a few months ago and I find myself really silly for that because it's so easy to do.
Google : "how to add RAM on {insert name of computer}", and boldly do it. RAM is not expensive these days and will make a world of difference on an older  machine. 

Last and not least : never ever remove a file because you don't know what it is ( Google it, right, you know what to do now)...And always restart the machine after an heavy round of deleting and re-organizing.

J'ai passé une heure au téléphone l'autre jour avec une amie pour lui apprendre à gérer son ordi pour qu'il aille plus vite et plante moins. J'ai eu la même conversation avec trois amies proches sur le même thème, et je me suis dit, les copines, je vais vous faire un post. Il y a des tas de trucs qui me paraissent évidents, à moi, parce que je suis une geekette depuis 1982, mais je me rends compte qu'en fait ça n'est pas évident du tout.

Tout d'abord :PAS DE PANIQUE!

Suivez cette  liste par étape. Aujourd'hui on ne fait rien de dangereux avec une machine, au contraire. Un petit truc : toujours lire deux fois avant de cliquer...

Oui, on peut faire plus et je connais des tas d'enquiquineurs qui vont trouver ci et ça, mais c'est le moment de dire "Chéri, va jouer chez Surcouf". On va juste faire des petits trucs simples pour libérer de la mémoire.

Commençons : la première chose à faire est de quitter tous les programmes en cours et de redémarrer cette machine. Choupette, il faut que tu connaisses tous tes mots de passe , en particulier le mot de passe administrateur . Note-les dans un joli carnet . Chouette, une raison de plus d'utiliser un joli carnet.

Alors, Mac ou autre chose, la première chose à faire est de vider le cache internet . Si tu ne sais pas comment faire , il suffit de Googueuliser "comment vider le cache internet sur { insérer le nom du browser internet ici }". Sur Safari, va dans le menu Safari en haut à gauche de ton écran, et choisis  " Réinitialiser Safari "( là je traduis en chute libre, corrige-moi si je me trompe) . Lis tranquillement les options et choisis tout ou partie . La première fois que tu vas vider ton cache ta machine va ralentir et grouiner pendant un super long moment (la honte). C'est qu'il y a des tonnes de trucs à jeter à la poubelle qui ne te servent à rien, ou encore mieux, servent surtout a Facebook et Google pour étudier ce que tu fais.... Une fois qu'on le fait souvent c'est très rapide.

Ta machine devrait être beaucoup plus rapide, instantanément. Une vraie dame vide son cache  tous les mois ou plus souvent...et sait même comment le faire sans réinitialiser ses mots de passe.

Puis, sur n'importe quelle machine, vérifie la quantité de mémoire qui reste sur disque dur. Encore une fois, si tu ne sais pas comment le faire , Google ma poule . Si ton disque dur est plein , supprime tous les fichiers inutiles , enregistre les images sur un DVD et /ou en ligne (Flickr quelqu'un ? Et puis partage  avec ta famille - ou pas) ou sur un disque supplémentaire et supprime  ceux que dont tu n'as pas besoin. Ne fais jamais  complètement confiance à un disque dur externe , ils cassent toujours après un ou deux ans d'usage ( et encore, je suis gentille). Désinstalle tous les logiciels que tu n'utilises jamais . Pour désinstaller un logiciel , tape  « comment désinstaller { insérer le nom du logiciel ici , ou du tout simplement " logiciel " }" sur Google. Libérer de la mémoire rend ta machine plus rapide en lui donnant de la place pour poser ses fichiers temporaires.

Ensuite, vérifie la quantité de RAM que tu as sur cet ordinateur (Google ? Oui) . Ou clique  sur la pomme en haut à gauche de ton écran pour un Mac , clique sur "A propos de ce Mac " et vérifie le nombre de Go - Gigabytes . Si tu as moins de 8GB, oublie Photoshop pro. Tu peux ajouter un peu de RAM toi-même (pas sur un portable) si tu regardes comment sur…Google ( c'est fou ça sert a tout, j'ai même réparé ma machine à laver avec). J'avais grave peur de le faire jusqu'il y a peu et je m'en mord les doigts parce que c'est super facile...Encore une fois , Google: " Comment ajouter de la RAM sur { insérer le nom exact de l'ordinateur }", et juste fais-le. La  RAM n'est pas chère de nos jours et ça change tout quand on en a plus.

Enfin et surtout : ne jamais supprimer un fichier parce que tu ne  sais pas ce que c'est  (Google le nom du fichier avant , hein, tu sais quoi faire maintenant ) ... Et toujours redémarrer la machine après avoir supprimé et déplacer beaucoup de fichiers. Si, il faut toujours le faire. 

Je te laisse profiter de ta nouvelle  machine, elle est plus rapide non? ... la prochaine fois , je te montre comment on évite de planter son MAC. Si, ça peut arriver.

To London, to London : shopping

I prepared my journey to London by noting cheerfully in my sketchbook all the things I wanted to do. Here, the list of shops I wanted to visit to grab a bit of cheerful English chic . And yes, I illustrated it with a cat drinking boba tea , wearing underwear as a hat. Because it's summer time, and girls just wanna have fun.

While in London, I managed to shop in most...I didn't buy anything at Liberty of London (lovely but I'm not rich) or at Monsoon Accessorize (the quality is not the same as it was in the nineties) ...Hamley's is overrated and expensive. But Paper Chase is fab, I wish they were still selling in the States ( they used to have a corner at Border's) , and I went crazy at Cath Kidson's. The summer collection was on sale, my oh my. Lovely shop in Covent Garden, and I bought enough goodies to make cheerful any gloomy day with delicious vintage florals.

Un petit tour à Londres...J'avais noté dans mon carnet les endroits ou je voulais vraiment aller...et les boutiques à vérifier! Avec un chat qui boit du boba tea histoire de ne pas trop se prendre au sérieux.

J'ai bien aimé les décos (poissons et origami, dans les photos) chez Liberty of London, mais c'est trop cher pour ma bourse! Par contre je suis allée chez Paperchase où j'ai trouvé plein de trucs très mignons pour le Bu (trousse, bouteille et crayons avec de jolis motifs, pas de tête de mort ou de motifs militaires )  et j'ai raffolé de la boutique Cath Kidson...en soldes, youhou! J'ai un sac à pois et une tasse à fleurs qui tient un bon demi litre de thé, deux choses absolument nécessaires.

Getting organized

C'est un peu raté au debut,le gorilla pod m'a lachée. Ne jamais faire confiance à un gorille quand on filme des lapins ( proverbe Hollywoodien)

Shrink paper how to

Getting it right with shrink paper is not that easy!

I had this idea in mind of cute shrink paper jewelry. Getting the process just right for wearable art was much more work than expected. I am actually still testing products and ideas.

I tested 3 kinds of paper from Grafix. The printable one would never flatten back after curling in the oven : maybe I got a lemon, but it's too expensive to make more tests. The translucent one did well but the result is not to my taste . The white one was exactly what I wanted but was very difficult to glaze or varnish.

I drew with classic Sharpies on the white grafix shrink paper, but Sharpie ink is NOT permanent on shrink paper. It looks ok. But after a while it melts on the skin or rubs off. It's  difficult to glaze because it is soluble with alcohol, acetone, and water. Most varnish have that kind of solvent. 

So I enquired around, with friend from many horizons, the stylists, the artists, the educators, the art store sales persons and the movie makers!

I ended up with a few solutions.

1.I you want a beautiful finish with an illustration like feel:

First sand your white shrink paper with a 400 grit sand paper to give it some tooth. There will be dust. Don't do this near any computer or electronic device.
Draw with colored pencils ( Prismacolor work beautifully). Keep in mind that your drawing will shrink to 40% of its size or more so your colors will be 2.5 more concentrated, at minimum. Browns will be black, reds will be intense, etc. Cut out, don't forget to punch holes.  Shrink according to instructions.Then glaze or varnish with either Sculpey gloss for a shiny result or some artist acrylic medium ( the paste kind sold in tubes) for a more matte finish. 

 

I first sketched my drawings on paper then put the paper over it to copy. It's thin enough before shrinking that you can see through .

2.If you want a black outline and maybe some fun neon accents.

Don't use classic Sharpies, especially the black ones. If you still do, the only glazes I found that worked were white glue (it won't dry properly) and artist acrylic medium. Thing is, the acrylic medium doesn't dry pretty like a glaze and I find it frustrating. It's not a professional result. I tried to glaze over medium with Sculpey gloss but it's not perfect.

I tried oil paint based Sharpies with sanded paper. Not a good idea. The ink feathered. Yuck!

I tried the same oil markers on un-sanded paper, it worked! I added a few classic Sharpie neon accents because I noted they were doing better with glaze ( better, not perfect). I was afraid, since it's oil based, that it wouldn't cook very well, but it did OK. I can't vouch for fumes though. Maybe it's toxic, but with the very little amount of ink I used I thought it might be ok. The oil based Sharpie is not melting with glaze or acrylic medium, and if not glazed doesn't rub off as fast as the classic sharpie.

So : Draw on unsanded shrink paper with oil paint based Sharpies  , cut out , don't forget to punch holes, shrink according to instructions, glaze or not ( it might rub off if you don't. It might dilute if you do).

So in conclusion 

There is only two combos that I really liked:

1.Sanded paper, Prismacolor, acrylic medium ( you can try some matte finish too) : it gives a nice "out of the book" illustration look. 

It's the one on the teapot.

2.Oil based sharpie permanent marker, sculpey glaze. It gives a fun shiny ceramic look.

That's it! I tried dozens of  tools and finishes and had a lot of fail. But the good results are really pretty.

Please use my tutorial but not my illustrations if you want to sell and make your own jewelry. Make your own tests before giving or selling as I can't vouch for  constant results. 

Flying Octopus

It's OK : my son found the octopus in the garden.

Ok, let me explain: I was on Skype with my favorite publisher ( the very one who helped me create " My Town"). It was quite warm so I left the window of my (small) studio opened. And my octopus kamifusen flew by the window and I was like :
"Oh noes, my octopus flew away!!"
Which is always a nice thing to say when you are on Skype trying to look sharp and professional? But It's OK. My publisher knows I'm crazy, anyway. And my son found the octopus in the garden. I put it back on the window, but this time I added a bit o'glue. Cause you never know. This is a flying octopus after all.

La pieuvre a atterri dans le jardin!  Et mon fils l'a trouvé.

J'ai eu une conversation très intéressante avec mon éditrice favorite ( avec qui j'ai crée Mon Village, achetez-le qu'il est bon) . Nous étions sur Skype, imaginant des trucs chouettes ( très chouettes) et j'avais laissé la fenêtre ouverte, mais tu ne veux pas savoir la température hum. Non. Et il y avait un peu de vent , heureusement... Sauf que j'ai une collection de kamifusen* accrochées à la fenêtre , et que la pieuvre s'est envolée. J'ai fait "Oh non, ma pieuvre s'est envolée" ce qui est toujours un truc à dire, genre, si tu veux avoir l'air sérieux et pro. Heureusement mon éditrice sait déjà que je suis folle. Et la pieuvre a atterri dans le jardin. 

J'ai raccroché mon kamifusen, mais avec un point de colle cette fois ci. Je ne me vois pas faire le tour des voisins en demandant si ils ont vu ma pieuvre. 

*la prochaine fois qu'on te demande comment on dit kokeshi  au pluriel, repond raah mais non, la forme plurielle est très rare en Japonais. 

Pinterest like a pro (1)

Do you have a Pinterest account? I do, and I use it a LOT. I am a very visual person, it has totally changed the way I work and the way I bookmark my favorite references.

Pinterest is fun but there is one little problem. When you are making a Pin from a blog post , it Pins the blog location, NOT the post itself. That's the reason why sometimes you click on a Pin all you get is a whole big pretty blog, and nothing about the cute tutorial you pinned two months ago.
The tutorial is not on the front page anymore and you will have to dig in the older posts to find it.

Its very frustrating, but at least for the pins you pin yourself from a blog, there is a solution:

You need to find the post permalink.  Now,I know,  my geeky friends are totally delighted by this wonderful piece of news, but most of you will be like :"What??"

A permalink, in short, is the address of the post itself, not the address of the blog it's posted on. And the most simple way to get it, on most blogs, is to simply...very simply...

Click on the title of the Post.

Like here : click on the Title "Pinterest like a Pro" . The internet address on your toolbar changes : instead of "http://del4yo.squarespace.com", now you can read "http://del4yo.squarespace.com/non-dairy-diary/2013/5/7/pinterest-like-a-pro-1.html"  

Bingo. Now if you pin the picture of that post or click on my Pinterest icon in  the commentary section, it will pin the exact post, not the blog.

I just saved your access to so many tutorials, didn't I?

Etes-vous sur Pinterest? J'y suis, et c'est un fantastique outil pour travailler ou partager des bonnes idées avec mes copines. Par contre, il y a un petit bout de code qui m'agace prodigieusement sur Pinterest : quand on pin depuis un blog et pas depuis un post, le lien devient obsolète quand l'auteur du blog reposte...Il faut aller chercher le post dans les archives, et c'est parfois décourageant.

Le truc c'est de trouver l'adresse fixe du post, qui ne changera pas. On appelle ça un permalink.  Et la façon la plus simple de le trouver, c'est de cliquer, dans la plupart des blogs, sur le titre du post, ici "Pinterest like pro". L'adresse dans la barre outil change et devient plus longue...Voila, vous pouvez utiliser Pinterest!

Je viens de vous sauver une bonne pelletée de tutoriels, non? Y'a pas de quoi, avec plaisir.

Photoshop granny brushes

Photoshop brushes can be fun...and even silly. 

I wondered if I could make a granny crochet brush and came out with this : it's a fun set of brushes with color changing grannies and a fun border. It has very little use, but a lot of stamina.

Je me suis souvent demandée si c'était possible de faire un set de brosses Photoshop spécial pour une couverture au crochet...Donc j'ai fini par le faire. Le résultat est un set de brosses totalement inutile, dont les carrés ne sont jamais de la même couleur, avec bordure assortie. De quoi faire une couverture en 30 secondes au lieu de trente ans, comme je fais d'habitude. Quoi??

What makes you think it's me, darling boy?

The iPad...and the scarf.

It's not the pajamas, the slouchy attitude, or the mess.  That boy is either very clever or loves me very much. Maybe even both.

Oh Maman regarde, c'est toi en renarde, dis? Je ne reponds pas que je sais ce que je dessine, ce serait malpoli, et ensuite j'ai l'habitude. Après tout c'est un peu magique un dessin: parfois ça a une vie propre. Pour moi je dessinais une maman qui bosse a la maison, un peu tranquille, pas forcement votre humble servante . 

Je m'enquiers "Et qu'est-ce qui te fait dire que c'est moi?"
Je suis un peu inquiète : qu'est ce qui me ressemble le plusdans ce dessin? Serait-ce l'échafaudage de couches de vêtements mous très californien, le chantier ou l'attitude vautrée de fin de matiné de travail ? Plus je me concentre, plus ma colonne vertébrale s'amollit. C'est mathématique et inévitable.

Soit tu es très fin, soit tu es vraiment gentil avec ta Maman. Je penche pour les deux...
